Each Wayuu bag is a unique and incomparable piece. Why? Behind each bag, there is the creativity and the work of a Wayuu woman, who hand weaves this bag, expressing ideas and emotions in patterns, motives, and figures. In local language, these bags are called wayuunaiki.

The Wayuu Community learns to weave in an early age. Weaving is part of the tradition, of the culture, of the historical and cultural heritage that Wayuu keep since the origins and it passes down from generation to generation. Moreover, since 2011, the Wayuu Weaving has the signature of Certificate of Origin, to certificate that this art textile characterizes this region of Colombia and it is recognized nationally and internationally. This signature gives an extra value to this art and to the work that Wayuu do to produce pieces of art, keeping and following the traditions.

Before being the main income of Wayuu Community, weaving is a way of conceiving and expressing life. Each Wayuu bag has its own design, made of colours and patterns inspired by life and nature. The figures and the colours used represent elements of nature, like plants and animals, flowers (vibrant colours) and trees (green). Each figure reflects a specific meaning. Our four collections represents the four elements of life: Earth, Air, Water and Fire.

Wayuu bags are woven through a technique called crochet, using cotton grass, maguey and other natural fibres. This type of weaving as well as the bright and vibrant colours are an influence of the colonialism, when Spanish people introduced the use of acrylic threads.
