THE KNOTTING, AS AN ART EXPRESSION BUT AS LIFESTYLE ASWELL
According to Mirja Wark, (Henri story institute, Belgium). The knowledge is given to the Wayuu girls from an early age, just after the first period, in a process called ”blanqueo” (whitening). In this process, they are taught about the art of natural medicine, manual arts and every task considered for women. In a matriarchal culture, the learning of the girls is very important. The women are responsible for transmitting the cultural heritage. (Want to know more about the wayuu knotting? Check out the interview to Mirja Wark).
That is why the knotting is something as ancient as themselves, intrinsic in their nature.
